Gamma Epsilon Tau (GET) is a co-ed national collegiate fraternity for members of the Graphic Arts. The fraternity has currently eight active chapters, with the national chapter located at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.
Gamma Epsilon Tau was organized in 1953 in New York City at the Annual Conference on Printing Education, sponsored by the International Graphic Arts Education Association. A group of printing Xi Omicron Pi brothers from the University of California at Santa Barbara collaborated with another group on the East Coast to make up what would eventually become known as Gamma Epsilon Tau. The need for people qualified to handle constant changes and developments in printing technology arose, especially when electronics and automation were introduced. The IGAEA was very receptive to the idea since more and more schools were establishing graphic arts curriculum and the need for qualified people could be fulfilled easier with the establishment of a society or club from which those people could be chosen.
The name Gamma Epsilon Tau (GET) is derived from the ancient Greek language. Translated, Gamma means letter, literature, or alphabet; Epsilon means science or knowledge; and Tau means art or craft. Hence, Gamma Epsilon Tau stands for "The science or knowledge of the art and craft of letters."
GET is the national co-ed collegiate Graphic Arts Honors fraternity. Its purpose is to allow students studying Printing and Publishing to meet and interact in both a professional and social atmosphere. The fraternity comprises undergraduate students enrolled in the Graphic Communications programs of various colleges, technical institutes, and universities. GET also has a large alumni base scattered throughout the Printing and Publishing industries worldwide. A candidate must be of good moral character, sincerity of purpose, and be willing to participate in the activities of the chapter, which range from technical and creative projects relating to the graphic arts, and social. These students, by virtue of their commitment to excellence in the Graphic Arts, merit admission into the Fraternity.
